Back Our Way

There’s a new release out!

A few years ago, I partnered with Amki Moors via ProCollabs to write and perform music on song she had written the lyrics to. We messaged back and forth, figured out a chord chart, melody line, all that. And then Covid hit both of our families, we lost steam, and the project just drifted around, lost.

Back in November, we finally decided to pick it back up. I had changed platforms from ProCollabs to Session Studio for the simplicity, communications features and ease of use, and I promptly uploaded some backing tracks. Amki killed it with the vocals, and I was able to reach out to Steven Stewart with Kentucky Shine for a beautiful violin track – the cherry on top.

But I’ll let Amki say a few words about how this song came to be, and then you fine folks can go give it a listen!

Amki:

I don’t know how to say this but… my song is finally here.

While I try to digest that, I’ll tell you where it came from.

My husband James is a gamer (here’s his YouTube channel). 4 years ago, he was playing Hardspace: Shipbreaker (from Blackbird Interactive)

As the storyline goes, Shipbreaker leaves Earth to make his fortune, owned by the corporation he works for.

But I got caught by the other half of his story. His daughter (and maybe wife) he left behind, not knowing what he does, or if he’ll ever return.

So the song made itself. And then nothing happened.

A few months later, Blackbird Interactive held a lyric writing competition.

I put ‘Back Our Way’ on the shelf and wrote ‘One Day Longer‘, the Shipbreaker’s own song, where he fights insanity and the unbearable hardship of his choices.

And the lyrics won. I carry the comments from listeners with me today (sorry for the pain felt by some).

But ‘Back Our Way’ was still on the shelf. And very slowly, it found a guitarist, Seth Peters, violinist Steven Stewart, and audio engineer/producer, Tony Parrish.

Thanks to them, there’s finally a song.

And special thanks to James Moors for creating the cover art, and lending me his voice-over equipment!
